Make Holistic Nutrition To Help Your New Year Resolution Stick

I know its already the end of February but for most people setting their health and fitness goals are already way off their yearly things to do. So Instead of having narrow resolutions like lose 10 pounds or exercise three days a week, make a broader and more meaningful resolution this year. Holistic nutrition is not the latest fad which will fizzle out in a few months. Holistic nutrition refers to an outlook on life that includes well being and health on many fronts. It doesn’t need to translate into weight loss or trimming off inches, but rather making lifestyle changes.
Holistic nutrition can include getting the entire family to focus on moving more for instance. Joining a bowling league or playing soft ball after dinner in the backyard could be steps towards this goal. However, including vitamins and protein shakes in to your diet, switching to canola oil from corn oil and other such switches will be pieces of the holistic nutrition puzzle.
To make your holistic nutrition goals more achievable, you can split it three ways:
Food
Don’t just switch to diet food; your family will get sick of it very soon. As part of the holistic nutrition resolution, learn how to make healthy substitutes for your family favorites and invest in a good grill where you can flame grill food rather than fry or cook in oil.
Don’t sidetrack drink when outlining your food guidelines. Get everyone funky water bottles and aim to fill them up a set number of times each day. Make a habit to grab a bottle of water as you get your keys when you step out the door so that you do not end up buying soda at the checkout.
Exercise
See what kinds of activities interest everyone and enroll as a family. If you cannot agree on one sport, then perhaps you can take turns to draw from a hat so that one month you can try tennis and the other month it could be softball. Some things like a weekend hike or swimming can be ongoing.
Supplements
Holistic nutrition also usually includes what kind of supplements you take in addition to the exercise and healthy dietary guidelines. Some people prefer to go the vitamins, herbs and pills route whereas others prefer homemade recipes like honey, cloves and other things you find in your pantry.
The mindset behind holistic nutrition should not be overwhelming for anyone. Even if it includes baby steps that are small yet regular, it makes more sense than doing one big sports activity and then not even thinking about it for the next month. Incorporating a brisk walk around the bock on most nights of the week or having a healthy glass of warm water with lemon juice first thing in the morning will make more sense for holistic nutrition in the long run than a game of football with the family once a year!
Cheers,
Carlo
